7 Steps to Create Your Own Deck of Cards
So you want to create your own deck of cards? How exciting! I have published and sold my own decks of cards over the past 8 years with my art known as the Enchanted Elementals.
I know it can be daunting when you have an idea but you just don’t know where to start.
But first, let me tell you about my journey to create my own deck of cards. It started because I was searching for a way to share my art in a unique way. I wanted something that would stand out and that would be easy to create, package, and ship.
Each of the Enchanted Elementals has a name and an essence. The essence is the meaning of the card – what the drawing represents. I also provide a very short statement about the meaning and how it may apply to the person who is drawn to it. I felt that a deck of cards would be perfect for me. I’d been using angel oracle cards in my own practice so I thought what a great idea it would be to create a deck around the Enchanted Elementals. I also wanted to start working with people using the Enchanted Elementals, so the oracle card deck was the perfect fit for me and my work.
Now, creating a deck of cards isn’t just about creating oracle cards. There are a ton of different types of cards that can be created. It just depends on what the purpose of your cards will be. Let’s get back to my story.
The first thing I did was investigate what it would take to get a publisher to accept my cards to publish. But I found that publishers weren’t interested in taking on new card deck authors without having an agent. So, I decided I was just going to have to do it myself. The next step I took was searching for instructions on how to make a deck of cards. I couldn’t find anything at all. And because I decided this was the best path for my artwork, I decided I’d would just figure it out. For me creating the deck using what I had already done was the easy part. What I mean is that I already had the artwork, the meaning of each card, and the process for using my cards. But figuring out how to print them was a pain in the hiney. After much research, I found that I could print my deck with the cute little box and the adorable little booklet but I needed to order 5,000 of them and I had to pay someone to put it in a format the printer could use to print. There was no way I had a budget for 5,000 decks and a graphic designer. And I didn’t even know if my deck would be successful. So I crossed that off my list.
In fact, I realized at that time that I didn’t even have a budget. But I wasn’t going to give up. After more research I was able to figure out how to print the cards, but it was really expensive. I just kept researching and experimenting until I was able to figure it all out. There’s been a lot of trial and error to get it done, but it’s been well worth the experience. Today, I have published two different sets of oracle cards and one affirmation deck. I retired my first set after selling them for several years.
